Set A Maintenance - Mastery tests. Based on material covered in Years 9 and 10, NZ curriculum level 5.
These are designed as a testing and teaching tool. Seven parallel papers divided into Number, Geometry, Measurement, Algebra, Statistics - Probability, and Problem Solving. Questions are worth one mark each apart for Problem Solving which are worth 2 marks each. Total of 8o marks for set B.
Set A is designed to be done without a calculator. Expected time given to students is one 90 minute session.
Set B is based on Yr 11 material, NZ curriculum Level 6 and a calculator is required.
Objectives of the Maintenance - Mastery tests are for:
- Students to improve on the mark of their initial test result. Students are given time to prepare, go over their tests, learn from their errors and aim to improve in the next set.
- Mastery of skills. Testing is three times per term in Terms 1 and 2, and twice in Term 3 and 4.
- Data. The results give teachers a lot of data for evaluating student progress and for reporting purposes.
- Differentiated teaching and learning. Mastery tests can be adapted for weaker students: they may concentrate on Number only, or a selection of topics rather than all the topics in the set. In the same class, you will end up with some students completing Set B while others remain on Set A.
