My name is Emily Closinski and I teach kindergarten at NA Walbran. The 2024-2025 school year will be my second in Oriskany, and my ninth year teaching overall. I graduated from Utica College in 2015 with a Bachelor's Degree in psychology and early childhood/childhood education. I received my Master's Degree in childhood special education in 2017, and am now certified in childhood education and special education, grades birth-six.
My umbrella rule for kindergarten is to simply, “Do the Right Thing”. Each and every day, students are asked to think about their choices and determine whether it was the right thing.
To help with this, these are more specific rules:
1.Be kind.
2.Respect myself and others.
3.Try my best.
There are three main types of logical, natural consequences.
1. You break it, you fix it- If something is broken (accidentally or intentionally), the student has to fix it. This can be for toys, classroom materials, but more importantly, for when students make a choice that has a negative impact on a peer. For example, if they give another child a ‘put down’ (teasing, name calling, etc.), they have to give them two ‘put ups’ (compliments, helping behaviors, etc.)
2. Loss of Privilege- This will be related directly to what the child was doing while he or she was making a poor choice. For example, they will not be able to use classroom manipulatives if they do not use them properly for that lesson.
3. Breaks- Students will be encouraged to take a break if it is noticed that they are becoming upset or frustrated, at the time of the frustration.
