Sustainable Mobility

Class Overview

This program presents an introduction to transportation engineering applications in the European context. The course will build on earlier studies with a particular emphasis on differences between U.S. and Dutch standards. The curriculum will feature material that contrasts engineering principles and policies focusing on the standards presented in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices and the Highway Capacity Manual. Specific emphases on engineering principles and practice will be explored through field trips and guest lectures both while abroad and in Corvallis. Students completing this course will have a greater understanding of the contrast in policies from the Corvallis area with communities in the Netherlands. Students will learn best practices for the design of intersections for transit, pedestrian, and bicycle travel. The course will feature multiple field trips and will highlight alternative design treatments that make what is considered alternative modes in the United States a priority. About me

I am Saqib (Sakeeb) undergraduate student at Oregon State University. My major is in Civil Engineering, and my interest is in Transportation Engineering and Geomatics.

I started my career as a road surveyor, then moved to topographic surveying, and later worked in an environmental construction company as a project coordinator. Surveying was always my first love, but Transportation is the last. My surveying background always helped me read and visualize any terrain in my brain by looking at the contour lines.

The Netherlands trip offered me something new that the other courses at OSU failed to deliver; “a newer insight into urban planning.” I worked on many housing projects, and I think all those projects missed out on an important part, the bicycle tracks. I have observed a significant difference in the social behavior of people because of healthy activities. People are happy, energetic, and charming, and ladies are more beautiful and age gracefully compared to the USA. A healthy habit brings a positive attitude, and positivity is essential for the mental health of the general public.
