Hello and welcome, from the HDFS 201 Instructional Team! I am Monica Olvera (she/her/ella) and I will be your instructor for HDFS 201, Contemporary Families in the US.
Please take a few minutes to explore the syllabus to get prepared for our class together.
I earned my BA from Oregon State University, and MA from the University of Oregon. I returned to OSU to complete a PhD in HDFS. My research interests focus on mothering practices among immigrant Latina women, and promoting positive cultural identity among adolescents. My hobbies include dancing cumbia, folkloric Mexican dance, and horseback riding. I love animals and love when people send me pictures of their pets, especially corgis.
I'm looking forward to our time together!

Outside of academics, I enjoy cooking, creating art, and hiking with my dog, Brandy.
My name is Iriana Muñoz (she/her) and I am from Tucson, Arizona. To contact me send me an inbox through Canvas for a quicker response (email is munozir@oregonstate.edu). Office Hours will be provided by appointment. My current research is in racial/ethnic socialization and identity in marginalized adolescents specifically Latinx college students. My hobbies outside of school are talking to friends/family, poetry, and going to the gym. I am looking forward to working with you all.
The Essentials
Spring term begins on March 31 and you will have access to the course Canvas site. Our first in-person meeting will be Tuesday, April 1, in LINC 128.
This is an in-person, lecture-based course. We have weekly in-person sessions on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 12-1:20pm.
This course is organized into weekly modules. Weeks begin on Mondays and end on Sundays.
How to Be Successful in this Course
Communicate early and often with your instructor and assigned Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTA) if you find yourself falling behind in the coursework.
Read announcements, emails, and other communication you receive from your instructor and GTA.
Print out or download the weekly quiz study guide at the beginning of each week to prepare your notes as the week progresses. (The quiz study guide is available in the quiz in each weekly module.)
Carefully read the Task List in each weekly module Overview page. The task list will tell you what assignments and readings to complete for that week.
Utilize Canvas tools such as the Calendar and To-Do List, and/or your own time management and planning strategies, to stay current with coursework.
Allow yourself the time and space you need to do your best work. A useful guideline is to set aside 2-3 hours of time for work outside the class for each credit hour. For example, this class is 3 credit hours, which translates to 6-9 hours of time per week outside of class to spend on readings, assignments, and assessments.
