Grace Deitzler, Ph.D.

Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Wyss Institute of Harvard University and former NSF Graduate Research Fellow at Oregon State University. Broadly, I am interested in how symbiotic microbial communities impact and interact with their hosts. I explore this through a mix of in vivo, in vitro, and in silico methods.

Introduction

I received my Ph.D. in Microbiology at Oregon State University in 2023 and my Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from Missouri University of Science and Technology in Rolla, MO in 2016, where I also received minors in Chemistry and Psychology. Currently I am studying the role of the gut microbiome in the development of intestinal diseases using a gut-chip model.

I am passionate about my science, as well as scientific outreach and science communication. I use art as a medium to traverse perceived barriers between scientific disciplines and public understanding of science. I am also dedicated to challenging longstanding beliefs about what a scientist looks like as a member of the LGBTQ community, and committed to doing my part to make academia a more diverse, inclusive, and equitable space for all. I'm also a former host of the award-winning, graduate-student run podcast and live radio show Inspiration Dissemination.

Media and Press

Former ID host Dr. Grace Deitzler joins Inspiration Dissemination for a final interview about her graduate research at Oregon State University. What happens when sick bees take probiotics? Article by Joseph Valencia, June 2023.

Is there a connection between the microbes in your gut and your behavior? Scientists at Oregon State are finding out. One of those scientists is Grace Deitzler. Grace is a fourth-year Ph.D. candidate in microbiology.
