As an Environmental Social Scientist, my research focuses on environmental behavior, adaptation and policy in response to resource use and conservation in an era of rapid climate change. Focusing primarily on the Western United States, I examine the interface of science and policy, public lands issues, wildfire policy, community resilience, contested natural resources, sustainable behavior and adaptive capacity, and policy regarding food, energy, and water.

Much of my research and teaching focuses on the politics and policy surrounding issues impacting public lands in the Western United States. My co-edited book (with Dr. Brent S. Steel) explores issues affecting Western Public Land such as endangered species, Native American sovereignty, water management, national parks, and contested land all through the lens of climate change which is rapidly changing the environmental and political landscape that shapes policy options. This book project also builds on research interests around identity and culture of the Western U.S. and how climate change and cultural changes make way for policies that may reshape Western identity.

My interest in science and policy resulted in a co-authored book (with Dr. Brent S. Steel) utilizing a west coast survey to examine how individuals' beliefs in positivism, political ideology, and postmaterialism (vs. materialism) affect their alignment with scientific consensus on climate change, genetically modified (GM) food, childhood vaccinations, stem cell research, and abstinence only education (including HPV vaccinations and Plan B). Differences between ideological beliefs and postmaterialism suggest that people tend to align their political and postmaterial (or material) values with the scientific issues that most conform to those beliefs. People holding strong positivistic views were most likely to concur with scientific consensus on all five issues explored.

In 2018, I was awarded the Moore Institute Visiting Research Fellowship at the National University of Ireland Galway. The fellowship was an opportunity to work with colleagues at NUI Galway (Dr. Frances Fahy) comparing survey results from residents in the U.S. and Ireland exploring household environmental behaviors. The Irish and U.S. survey examined the attitudes and behaviors of survey participants on sustainable lifestyle choices pertaining to food, water, energy and mobility (transportation). The survey further explored attitudes about quality of life and environmental regulation, barriers to sustainable behaviors, and beliefs about environmental responsibility. Results of the surveys were the basis for policy briefs and journal articles.

Steel, we conducted a food, water, and energy (FWE) policy survey of residents in Oregon, Washington, California and Idaho. The aim of the study is to explore FWE nexus policy preferences and opinions, with attention paid to people's preferred trade-offs among each sector. The survey was conducted with the assistance from ten graduate students. Results of this survey were presented at the Pacific Northwest Political Science Association (PNWPSA) annual conference as a special panel. This survey is the basis for several master's theses, conference papers, and journal articles.
