The diabolical ironclad beetle can “withstand around 39,000 times its own body weight” (Temming 2020). The equivalent for humans would be shouldering 40 military tanks (Temming 2020). This beetle is currently the inspiration for multiple innovations of protection with the main one being reinforcing buildings to be more suitable against natural disasters. Currently, concrete is the strongest material in compression for building structures, but their many global effects that come from making concrete. A team of researchers at University of California Irvine have started looking at the immense strength of the diabolical ironclad beetle to make a substance to make buildings strong and flexible enough to withstand any natural disaster.
