Physical Therapy

Physical Therapy is a related service within the school setting. The team collaborates to make the decision as to whether a child with a disability qualifies for school physical therapy. Physical therapy is provided to benefit their access to education. A therapist might provide direct services or indirect consultation with team members. Therapy might work toward independent and safe mobility throughout the school, and/or work on improving gross motor skills needed for playing on the playground or in Physical Education class. Accessing the environment and other classmates is necessary for socialization and learning. Interventions might include strengthening, balance, flexibility, endurance, coordination and sensory activities, to name a few. Therapists also evaluate the need for adaptive equipment to enable a child to reach their educational goals that are set during an IEP meeting.
