Ways to participate

Lawyer - Write and deliver opening and closing statements, work with witness(es) to write and conduct direct and cross examinations, influence and develop themes and theories of the case. Collaborate with other lawyers and witness to maintain integrity of respective sides (prosecution and defense) of the case.

Witness - Get into character and act out a role. Work with a lawyer to develop and perform a direct examination. Prepare for and perform a cross-examination conducted by a lawyer from another team. Provide feedback for collaborating lawyer to help develop the characteristics of the role and the quality direct examination.

Mixed Roles - some participants are a lawyer for one side of the case and witness during the other side of the case. So, you combine both of the roles above.

Timekeeper - Learn the timekeeping rules, and time the individual parts of the case and ensure the team does not exceed time limits. (Sometimes fill in as an emergency witness?)

Non-competition / Practice - If you want to be a part of the team, but aren’t interested in competing just yet.

Time Commitments

Two Lawyer roles - highest time / commitment level

One Lawyer role - significant commitment, but some flexibility

Two Witness roles - significant commitment, small degree of flexibility

One Witness - important commitment, but more flexibility

Mixed Lawyer / Witness (one of each) - high time / commitment level

Time Keeper - important to be available for competition, but significant flexibility
