After the Fall
Humpty Dumpty sat on a wall,
Humpty Dumpty had a great fall;
All the king's horses and all the king's men
Couldn't put Humpty together again.
According to military historians, Humpty Dumpty was the name of a cannon used by English Royalists in the English Civil War of 1642-1649.
During the war, Royalists placed the cannon on the wall surrounding the city of Colchester. In 1648, while under attack, an enemy’s cannonball blew apart the wall upon which Humpty Dumpty sat, sending it tumbling to the ground. The cannon was beyond repair.
In chapter 6 of the classic book Through the Looking-Glass by Lewis Carroll, Alice (in Wonderland) meets the character Humpty Dumpty who is written and illustrated as an EGG even though it was originally a cannon! 🤯
