Standards

This project meets the following Vermont AOE standards:

Transferrable Skills:

Clear and effective communication:

This video project first and foremost addresses the standard of clear and effective communication. By having to create a succinct video to communicate their ideas, students will be learning about how to engage their audience and effectively convey a message.

Through their videos, students will be able to:

"present their ideas coherently, with a clear or creative sequence" and

"Confidently and habitually use complex academic vocabulary, vivid images and/or phrases, syntax, and grammar to enhance their message and perspective"

The project also involves different performance indicators from the other transferrable skills:

Students will solve problems encountered in creating their videos by using the variety of tools provided. This falls mainly under letter G of the standard, which states that, "Student will use a range of tools, including technology, to solve a problem."

These videos could be used in students' PLP portfolios. They could also be used at our school coffee houses. Furthermore, the lessons created here could be used in other classes to help students communicate learning.

Under this skills, students will be certainly practicing digital citizenship (performance indicator F), citing their sources and using material that is royalty free or under a creative commons license. They may also be doing many of the other skills listed, such as respecting diverse points of view (D) and taking responsiblity for personal decisions and actions (B).

Students will need to show self-direction in this video project. They will have to plan out their time (especially knowing that videos always take longer than anticipated!) In particular, students will need to "demonstrate initiative and responsibility for learning" (D)

· Monitor and make decisions around my learning goals, identify my strengths and needs, and employ strategies that allow me to achieve my goals;

· Self-start and manage my time by organizing and prioritizing to complete a task.

They will also need to demonstrate flexibility (E), "solicit and utilize feedback on multiple trials/drafts to improve my performance or revise their thinking" and "ask questions about new ideas to challenge myself to investigate new skills." They will need to "use collaboration to exchange ideas, using others to advance their learning with reasoning and evidence" (G), and "persevere in challenging situations (H).

Most certainly, this project allows students to show that they can "Use technology and digital media strategically and capably"(H). By creating a polished, finished video, students will be using a variety of platforms, devices and resources: websites, social media, mobile devices, recording devices, cameras, and microphones.

Proficiency Standards

Depending on the use of the video (English personal narrative or a video poem), the project can meet the following suggested Vermont AOE proficiency standards for English Language Arts and Visual Arts. Students will gain discussion skills by working in groups to discuss their projects. They also will use multimedia to add interest to their topic, and will need to use the conventions of the English to communicate in their video.

This project could fall under the visual arts proficiency if the video is seen as a more artistic endeavor. For example, creating a video based on lines of a poem is certainly an artistic interpretation that requires selecting and organizing media / images in such a way to relay a clear and compelling message.
