Building Teams and Self-Esteem
At the Orange Public Schools, we believe in the saying, "there is no 'I' in 'team.'" We strive to develop lifelong patrons of the arts by building teams within each discipline of the visual and performing arts. In doing so successfully, students' self-esteem improves tremendously which fosters leadership and respect in every individual student.
The mission of the Visual and Performing Arts Office is to ensure that every child has access to a balanced, comprehensive, and sequential program of study in the arts. Arts education, as part of the core curriculum, cultivates the whole child, gradually building many kinds of literacy while developing intuition, imagination, and dexterity into unique forms of expression and communication. We provide support to all VPA staff so that every child will have the opportunity to experience the power and beauty of the arts and the joy, creativity, and intellectual stimulation that arts education programs we provide.
The vision of the Visual and Performing Arts Department is to provide high quality educational programs for students that develop the whole person through a curriculum that integrates the performing and visual arts. All Orange Public School District students will be creative, collaborative, and artistic individuals prepared for deep engagement through exploring, understanding, and mastering the arts .
Our vision includes the belief that:
A strong academic program unlocks and supports the artistic potential of our students.
The best discipline comes from a commitment to shared goals.
The performing and fine arts encourage each individual to work in a creative, cooperative and collaborative manner while promoting independent thinking.
Students learn best in a participative and creative environment placed within a firm framework of high standards in teaching and learning.
Students need an understanding of, and access to, developing technologies in order to encourage participation and leadership in a technologically developing society.
Why the Arts Matter
Research shows that students who have an arts education are more successful in school and life. Students in the arts:
are more motivated and engaged,
have better attendance,
have lower discipline rates,
do better academically,
are more likely to graduate, and
are more civically engaged as adults.
