Here is an update for the next two weeks! I have given students electronic copies and printed copies. If you need printed copies, they are available at school for pick up. Below will be my daily schedule while we are away for two weeks.
8:20-11:15 (ELA) * Read Aloud with Mrs. Parker and Holt! I will be reading stories to my son! Join in if you would like to hear! I will start at 9:00am! From 9:15-11:15 I will go over ELA and be available via google hangout or email. The link to the google hangout will be added daily.
From 11:20-12:24 and 1:00-2:00 (Social Studies) I will be available for social studies help. I will send a link via google classroom for students to join. I will go over any questions you may have. I also will be responding to emails.
2:00-4:00 is my planning period. I will be prepping for the next day and following weeks to come. I may have virtual meetings I have to attend and might not be available for immediate responses. I will get back to you when I can.
Below is instructions for ELA and Social Studies assignments for the two weeks we are out.
ELA: As an ELA whole (the whole ELA department 6-8) we decided to review the skills we have already done by creating a reading choice board. This requires a lot of reading and their reader's notebook/binder. We are working on making sure there is examples of each for students to look at while away.
Social Studies: Students have a textbook or printed pages from a textbook, that has three lessons. At the end of each lesson there are 7 questions the students need to answer in complete sentences. Once this is completed they may move on to the BrainPop assignment. Students need to login to clever through rapidID to have access to the assignments. Each of the three civilizations we are working on will have vocabulary, a video, a video quiz, a worksheet and a coding activity for extra support. Again, this is for EACH, Inca, Mayan and Aztec!
WHEW! I am finally catching my breathe from my return back to school! I will start by apologizing for not keeping this updated. I will finish the year strong with keeping you all posted with the upcoming events and times being taught in my ELA and Social Studies classes.
ELA: We are currently writing a memoir! Students read a memoir with Ms. Smith, Marley and Me, so now we are writing our own! Students are receiving one on one feedback and also given digital resources to help with developing their writing. Students have a copy of the rubric check list and a link to all other digital sources on google classroom.
Our next reading unit is nonfiction! Please keep in mind that students need to be reading at least 20 pages a night to keep up with finishing books!
Social Studies: Students completed Ancient Greece last week. They have had two opportunities to retest. I am going over those results and entering grades in PowerSchool this week. We are currently on Ancient Rome. Students are completing a self paced digital study of Rome. The test will be multiple choice this Friday.
ELA: We have started Bend III of our first Unit! This week we are looking into our books for motifs and themes. Students will be exposed to different stories and picture books to show how to find motifs and develop them into themes. Check out one of my favorite picture books, Crown: the Ode to the Fresh Cut! This would be a great book you can talk about with your student about motifs and theme! This will be the last bend in the unit and one of the last grades entered before quarter 1 is done. Grades will be completed before I am off for maternity leave!
Social Studies: We are still working our way through the interesting fantasy novel, The Red Pyramid. Students are completing a companion guide with cross curricular activities as we read through the novel. Students also are spending time collecting information about Ancient Egypt in preparation for their informational writing in the weeks to come. The comprehension test will be included in the quarter 1 grades, but NOT the essay. Please take a look at the overview of the informative essay your student will be writing in the next week. This can be found on google classroom under LDC: Ancient Egypt Essay.
Hi All! Progress reports have made there way home tonight! Please check my link here about how grades work in ELA and Social Studies class. I hope to see you this week for Curriculum night to show you exactly what goes on in my classes! Feel free to come with questions!
ELA: Students have now entered bend 2 of the Deep Study of Character unit. We will be working on how the setting of a story can influence character behaviors. Students will be responsible for showing this work in their binders. Each of the color notes to the left should be found in their binder once the skill is taught. Please make sure students are reading at least 20 pages at night! This helps with class time, where students are working with the book they are reading.
REMINDER: Students are also required to keep a blog on their digital portfolios. Prompts are given each week and students will receive a grade for those blogs!
Social Studies: We are exploring Ancient Egypt! Students will spend half the class time researching Ancient Egypt and the other half reading a fantasy novel, The Red Pyramid. Students are given different social studies and reading task daily. I am hoping by making this unit cross-curricular students will get an extra dose of reading skills while still applying real information about how Ancient Egyptians lived and help develop the way civilizations developed all over the world. The "test" for this unit will be a essay, which will be assigned once the novel and research is completed.
ELA: Students have started their first Unit! After finding just right books, we are diving into a Deep Study of Character. Students will be learning how complicated characters can be. Students will be required to show their thinking in their binders. Reading at least 20 pages a night is required. To the left you can find a the reference chart of the work we will be doing. I can't wait to see the creativity and deep thoughts students will produce for this unit. Be on the look out for me to share!
Social Studies: We have officially started our first Unit! Prehistory! This week and into the next students will learn about Early Humans and how and what makes a civilization. Students will complete notes, different reading activities and classwork to grasp this concept. They will have a choice to follow along digitally or work in their notebooks. Students will receive a study guide to fill out during the unit. Feel free to take a look at the links for this unit in the left hand corner!
ELA: Last week students were off to a GREAT start on learning the routines of Reader's Workshop! Students quickly accessed books and began completing skills in their binders.
Social Studies: Students engaged in Map Skills and got to practice what it looks like to take notes in Social Studies. Students will show off their map skills later this week with a map skill test!
