In Reading Workshop, students should read (and finish!) books on or near their assessed independent reading level for class work and homework. Students can use their independent reading level as a starting point and choose a book one level below or one level above it. For example, a student reading at an independent Level P should feel free to choose books from Levels O, P, and Q.
Every student knows their level, which is designated by a letter. They can "shop" for a book anytime in the leveled classroom library. Books of choice that are well above their assessed reading level should be encouraged and explored during "extra" reading time.
To check if books are at a good independent level, please encourage your children to use the "Five Finger Rule."
