Outside Courses for OPHS Credit

Planning to take a course outside the district?
Please read the information below before enrolling in a non-OPUSD course.

Students wanting to take an outside course need to receive prior approval before the course starts.

Please complete the OPHS Alternative Credits from Non-OPUSD Accredited Institutions form to start the approval process. All requests for outside credit courses taken during the summer of 2024 must be submitted on or before June 16, 2024.  The form will stop accepting requests after June 16, 2024.

Learn about taking classes outside OPUSD, including the potential for credit transfer to four-year colleges, exploration of subjects unavailable on campus, and the impact on college applications. The presentation outlines who can take outside courses, the process for adding these courses to an OPUSD transcript, and considerations for choosing outside education. It also provides information on courses that can be added as Credit/No Credit or as a letter grade, the approval process, and where to find more information. This resource is designed to help students and parents navigate the options for supplementing education through outside courses, ensuring they are well informed about the implications for graduation requirements and college applications.

The "OPHS Alternative Credits FAQ" document provides detailed guidance for OPHS students considering taking courses for alternative credit towards graduation. The FAQ covers a range of topics, including the process for getting outside courses approved, limitations on the number of credits that can be taken to be added to the OPUSD transcript, and specific considerations for UC A-G and NCAA eligibility. It also addresses the importance of taking courses in sequence, the impact on GPA, and the process for remediation of courses with grades below C-. This document is a crucial resource for students.

The "2024 Summer School Opportunities" outlines various educational programs available to OPHS students during the summer. Beginning in 2024, students can earn up to 40 outside credits from non-OPUSD accredited institutions, applicable towards graduation requirements on a "Credit/No Credit" basis, with a cap of 10 credits per academic year and subject A-G. The presentation details options for credit recovery, acceleration (notably in Geometry offered by OPUSD), and enrichment through courses at community colleges, online platforms, and other accredited institutions. This guide is essential for students and parents planning summer academic activities.
