The day-to-day business of the local is performed by the Local Executive Committee (LEC). The LEC is entirely volunteer members with different positions and responsibilities. All Stewards and Officers are Support Staff at Mohawk, just like you.
Stewards are the backbone of Local operations and have a long history in organized labour. Any member in good standing, full-time or part-time, can volunteer as a Steward. Stewards do many different things at the local, including:
Welcoming new members to their departments.
Helping answer member questions and inform them about updates, news, and events.
Meet with all Stewards and Officers monthly at a Local Executive Committee meeting.
Listen for and identify members’ diverse issues and bring them to the LEC/Unit Committee for discussion.
Bring together diverse members to build solidarity and seek support for workplace actions.
Attend LEC/Unit Committee meetings to participate in decision-making.
Perform preparation and investigation of grievances arising from members.
Represent members in grievances and other meetings with management.
Stewards may expand their core responsibilities to other areas, including health and safety, bargaining, campus committees, provincial committees, building links outside the local, and more. A Steward can be nominated for any Officer position at Local elections.
Stewards become Officers by being elected at a General Membership Meeting every two years. Any Steward can be nominated for any Officer position.
Local 241's officer roles are:
President - Enforces compliance with the bylaws and regulations of the Union, chairs meetings, and supervises the operations of the Local. Directly connects with College HR/Labour Relations and campus committees. Represents the Local to the rest of OPSEU and community labour movements.
Vice-President - Performs presidential functions during any absence of the President, including attending functions of the Union when the President can't attend.
Secretary - Documents meeting minutes, plans and organizes all local meetings, authors notifications and memos to members. Maintains local member records, event attendance, and files. Answers general inquiry emails from members.
Treasurer - Responsible for Local finances, budgets, and operating funds. Develops and presents financial reports and annual budgets at membership meetings. Issues cheques and payments for authorized expenses. Works together with our accountant and Trustees to audit our financial performance.
Communications Officer - Distributes announcements to members by email, website, and social media. Maintains the Local's Instagram account and LinkTree.
Part-Time Unit Steward - Coordinates, leads and assists Stewards in part-time unit matters.
Full-Time Unit Steward - Coordinates, leads and assists Stewards in full-time unit matters.
Trustees cannot be members of the Local Executive Committee. Working with the Treasurer, Trustees audit our finances and report our performance to OPSEU/SEFPO.
Our Local has two trustees elected to two-year terms. Any member in good standing can be nominated and elected as a Trustee. Trustees cannot hold any other position at the Local.
There are many committees operated voluntarily by members of the Local Executive Committee and members at large. Examples include Member Engagement, Education, Creative/Communication, Classification, etc., and allow you to get involved in a specific topic or activity of union activism and contract enforcement.
OPSEU/SEFPO's Constitution is the guiding document for all union locals.
Local 241's Bylaws establish guidelines for how we operate.
