Our school continues to participate in the #KidsNeedMentors program by partnering with Sammie Vance. She is a 14-year-old author who published her first book in 2021: Inspire the World: A Kids Journey to Making a Difference. One thing that she says in her book and on her Smile podcast is that "You don't just have to be an adult to make a difference, you can be a kid too!" We have taken this to heart at South Davis.
Here are a few ways that Sammie inspired us:
New Buddy Bench for South Davis - During the 2021-2022 school year, we collected plastic bottle caps and lids to recycle through the Green Tree Plastic's ABC Promise Partnership Program. Our goal was to secure 2 new Buddy Benches to be a part of our new playground. All unused caps and lids will be added to a mural that students painted at our End of the School Year Celebration. Pictures coming soon!
Giving Tuesday Spark - The 2023-2024 school year marks our 3rd year joining Sammie in writing notes and sharing smiles with members of our community.
Smile Center - Our Kindness Agents set up a Smile Center to spread cheer throughout our building and beyond. They are working on relaunching it for the 2023-2024 school year. It will be in our front hall where anyone who would like to can write a kind note to brighten someone's day.
Student BPCC Group - Sammie challenged us to find new ways to give our students opportunities to use their voices on issues that are important to them. We formed a group of 4th and 5th grade students to act as a sub-group of the BPCC (Bullying Prevention Coordinating Committee) so that we could actively work together in our efforts to create a welcoming and safe space for all students. Last year, our students worked with the OPCSD Transportation Department to develop Bus expectations that will be on display on every school bus soon.
