Like all high school sports, rifle provides athletes with a potential opportunity to pursue the sport in college. There are approximately 30 colleges who currently have teams. Please use this site to research colleges if this is a path you would like to pursue.
College coaches are looking for athletes who participate in matches outside of varsity matches. Those matches include CMP, USA Shooting, NRA, and Opens hosted at various colleges throughout the year.
College rifle teams compete in 3 position smallbore (.22 long rifle) matches in addition to air rifle. Even though it's not always a deal breaker college coaches are looking for athletes who are experienced in both disciplines.
As a rifle athlete you should create, update, and share a marksmanship resume highlighting all of your personal records and awards you have received. Then email the college coach and assistant coaches of the colleges you are interested in. They want and look forward to communicating with you!
You will also need to register online with the NCAA Eligibility Center. This is another important step that is often over looked by high school athletes.
Finally, be sure to schedule an appointment with your school counselor to let them know you intend to pursue marksmanship as a college sport. They will help to make sure you are eligible.
