Accelerated Reader, or A.R., is a program that we use at Highland to help increase student literacy. Students read books independently, and earn points for completing quizzes on the books. All students have a goal to score an average of 90% or higher on all their quizzes.
Students are only allowed to take A.R. quizzes at school (during school hours). However, parents are encouraged to read library books with their child and record the A.R. information in their folders so that they can take the quiz at school. Reading the book more than once (if it's a shorter picture book) and discussing the events in the story are ALWAYS a great idea to ensure students comprehend what they read and pass the A.R. quiz!
A.R. folders are provided for each student and should be returned to the library with them each week. These folders contain students' personalized reading goals for each 9 week grading period, the rewards students are working toward, and a chart for them to log the A.R. tests they take.
