Formed in 1996 with the support of scores of newspapers, television stations, academics, librarians, genealogists and even two former governors, VCOG works every day to promote principles of open government in Virginia. Through education, advocacy and dissemination of news, VCOG confronts the obstacles to public access to government records and meetings and works towards solutions.
An open, transparent government is essential to democracy, and citizens must have access to government information if they are to hold their state and local governments and their officials accountable.
VCOG is supported by a 27-member board of directors. Its current board president is Jeff South, a former journalism professor at VCU, and its executive director since 2008 is Megan Rhyne.
VCOG depends on the dues and donations of individuals, businesses and organizations, as well as events and limited endowment income.
Please support our work by becoming a member or making a donation. Recurring donations ($25 each month, e.g.) are especially helpful because they are reliable. Give today and be a partner in all that we do.
