What a wonderful and busy start to the school year! Students celebrated Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month with a variety of fun and meaningful activities. They enjoyed playing Lotería while listening to morning announcements read by their classmates and learning about the clothing, foods, music, animals, and traditions of Spanish-speaking countries. During our weeklong celebration, students colored the flag of their adopted country, read books, listened to music, brought in cultural artifacts, and attended an exciting assembly featuring Peruvian dancers. It was a joyful way to honor and learn about the rich diversity of the Spanish-speaking world!
Here’s what our students have been up to in Spanish class this month!
Kindergarten – Our youngest learners had so much fun singing a pumpkin song while learning different emotions in Spanish! They even made adorable finger puppets to keep practicing at home.
1st Grade – First graders reviewed family vocabulary through the Encanto song “La Familia Madrigal” as they continued exploring their adopted country, Colombia.
2nd Grade – Second graders joined the Symbolic Migration Project along with students from Mexico, the U.S., and Canada! They created paper butterflies that will “migrate” to Mexico for the winter. In the spring, we’ll receive butterflies made by students there—how exciting!
3rd Grade – Third graders loved learning about different kinds of bears and where they live around the world. We’re now getting ready to dive into our next Spanish novel!
4th Grade – Fourth graders visited the National Museum of Mexican Art to experience the beautiful Day of the Dead exhibition firsthand.
5th Grade – Fifth graders worked in teams on activities to review basic Spanish phrases before listening to the song “¿Cómo estás?”. It was a great way to practice collaboration and communication!
To kick off the school year, we have been practicing greetings and basic questions about ourselves; learning the routines, and expectations for Spanish class.
