Everyone has a different brain. Of course! That's common sense. But sometimes we as adults forget to take the time to model and explain that to kids. This page will share some ideas and resources to help you and your child understand the way different people's brains work and how that can help in friendships.
Everyone has a different brain. Of course! That's common sense. But sometimes we as adults forget to take the time to model and explain that to kids. This page will share some ideas and resources to help you and your child understand the way different people's brains work and how that can help in friendships.
Some people's brains work in very unique ways that we may not always understand. That is not a bad thing. In fact, it makes life more interesting and rich. It would be so boring if we were all the same! This message is something we talk about both indirectly through play and directly through conversations and stories. It is vital that our kiddos learn acceptance and flexibility as early as possible. That will make their lives and the world a more fun and kind place.

This is a broad overview about a few kinds of disabilities and kinds of neurodiversity. I will also define what these terms mean and give some resources to help you and your child understand them. Please remember I am NOT a medical professional and cannot diagnose or give you advice. This is just information I have found helpful in my journey of understanding and teaching kids. I encourage you to do your own research and consult your own trusted medical professionals if you want more personal information regarding a loved one.

Neurodiversity
Neurodiverse (and other forms like neurodiversity) is a newer term that is gaining popularity among both every day people and medical professionals. It encompasses a lot of diagnoses such as those listed in the picture below. Maybe people with these differences find the term to be more accurate and empowering for them. The literal definition is diverse brains as the word suggests. Brains that work differently from the general population and/or the "norm". This may seem like a small shift from other terms that have been used in the past but it can make a world of difference in making the world a more inclusive place for everyone.
