A Call for Submissions for a Book Collecting Social Action Stories

Too often I have heard that a person feels powerless to promote change. They state one small voice does not make enough sound in addressing issues of diversity, equity, race, sex, sexism, social justice... Consider all these stories of change in one collection. Imagine how powerful they can be to help motivate others.

Stories make connections. I would like to invite you to contribute a story or two that serves this purpose. We ask that your story is true or based on actual accounts.

We have a publisher invested in this work. We are seeking people who have a story that can promote others to act in a positive way or help people re-consider their directions. This can address any issue of social action.

The real value is knowing the story serves this end. Saying this, right now I am not able to offer compensation but I know that we can offer reduced prices for books to the authors upon publication. You will be able to sell future books at these rates. If this does change and we are able to compensate contributors, we will explore this as an option. Our publisher is a smaller press and can’t afford this at this time.

We want to collect many stories. This is why we are setting a word length of up to 2000 words. You may submit a short 500-word story or a 2000-word story. We ask that it be no longer than 2000 words. Some exceptions may be considered.

We want to collect stories from all walks of life. Teachers. students, cafeteria workers. organizers. social justice advocates. gardeners. yoga instructors... We can all teach others with our stories. We want stories promoting social action. Perhaps you know of work that needs to be shared by others, perhaps it is your work that can be voiced. We don’t necessarily want the grandiose stories, but instead share the small narratives that made a difference for someone or for a community. This story could have changed you so that you could help others. However, the story may have you question or re-direct your actions.

With the stories, we will ask for tips and advice that complement the narratives. We ask that the stories can be used for telling. We see community action groups, schools, student groups, and more using your story, either by reading it or telling it, to promote social action. This means it needs to sound like a story and not an essay.

We also ask that you send a “Permission to Publish” form to Dr. Kevin Cordi at kctells@gmail.com and in addition to sharing your story on the form, send a copy of your narrative to Dr. Cordi. We ask that you send your story by March 31, 2019.

In April/May, an undisclosed committee will select and work to notify all contributors as to the status of their submissions. We will also send editing comments and/or questions for clarity during these times (or after) if necessary.
