Students' Reasoning with Representations of Bond and Molecular Polarity

This research investigated students' reasoning with multiple representations of polar and nonpolar bonds and molecules. Some of these representations included explicit features of dipole arrows, partial charges or electrosatic potential maps. We designed a semi-structured interview guide using multiple representations to characterize the thinking of students who completed the first semester of college chemistry. (Image from Gilbert, Kirss, Foster, Bretz & Davies, 2017.) A manuscript describing the adapations to the interview protocol during COVID remote data collection was published in the Journal of Chemical Education.
