We characterize students' understandings of and reasoning with macroscopic (observations with human senses), particulate (structure of molecules, ions & atoms), & symbolic (equations and math notation) representations.

We develop tools to measure meaningful learning by focusing on the cognitive (thinking about chemistry), affective (feelings about chemistry), and psychomotor (doing of chemistry) dimensions of learning.

We gratefully acknowledge our generous funding.
