Quizlet is fundamentally a flashcard application where each item in a study set comprises two elements: a term and its definition. For example, a subject, such as botany, the terms could be images of plants, with the definitions being their names or classifications. Quizlet gives you five possible ways to study: Flashcards, Learn, Test, Match, and Q-Chat.
Flashcards: Flashcards let you study by cycling through cards, marking learned ones, and using Quizlet Plus for smart notifications based on your learning progress.
Learn: Learn quizzes you with prompts from your set, offering options like Write Mode and Spell Mode for interactive learning, all now consolidated within the Learn section.
Test: Test mode offers quizzes based on your study sets, featuring question types like matching and multiple choice. It's for self-assessment, focusing on accurate recall from your flashcards, with customizable options for question types before starting.
Match: In Match mode, you pair half of the terms with their corresponding definitions under a timed setting, encouraging competition to beat personal or others' best times.
Q-Chat: Q-Chat allows interaction with AI for studying purposes, offering options like learning, quizzing, or applying knowledge tailored to your study set, though it's important to note its limitations with accuracy in some cases, such as language recognition.
Quizlet as a Tool for Gamified Learning
Quizlet adds a fun, gamified element to learner. For example, in language learning—a great enhancement for learners using language learning apps—the term would be a word in the target language, and the definition would be its translation in your native language. Quizlet was used in a 2021 study at Walailak University, to assist struggling students who were learning English. The results show there is certainly an increase in vocabulary acquisition when Quizlet was used (Waluyo & Bucol, 2021). To learn more about that research, CLICK HERE. "This result goes to show that the gamification of learning can be quite a positive improvement on the way we teach our students, especially the younger ones" (Klap, 2022).
