Mariana Shimabukuro, Ph.D. Computer Science Professor & User-centered Design Researcher Ontario Tech University
I am an Associate Teaching Professor in the Faculty of Science and a Visualization and HCI researcher at Ontario Tech University. My current research focuses on empowering users through interactive visualization and applications. I create user-centered applications that leverage data-driven resources, including AI, LLMs, and NLP.
I first joined the Visualization for Information Analysis (vialab) at Ontario Tech University in 2013 as an undergraduate research assistant. Under the supervision of Dr. Christopher Collins, I completed my M.Sc. degree (2017), investigating methods for automatically abbreviating text labels for information visualizations, and my Ph.D. (2024), focusing on user-centered applications that promote autonomy in language learners.
As an educator, I am passionate about fostering a collaborative and inclusive learning environment where students are encouraged to think critically and creatively. I strive to bridge the gap between theory and practice by incorporating hands-on projects and real-world applications into my teaching. Mentoring students and guiding them through research projects is one of the most rewarding aspects of my role, and I am dedicated to helping them develop skills that will prepare them for successful careers in computing and beyond.
Since starting my position as a professor, I have supervised and co-supervised multiple undergraduate research projects, including LingoComics, which was presented as a poster at UIST 2024. I also co-supervise an MSc student working on AI and human collaboration for text document annotations using pen-based devices.
My current research interests include AI-powered and user-centered applications for enabling user empowerment, data visualization and analytics, language learning, interaction design, recommendation systems, and education.
