Educators have always strived to find the most efficient ways of approaching the learning process. Understanding how learners interact and process new information can inform educators of the best practices to follow when teaching students.
There are many different strategies that will help you to avoid cognitive overload in your students. For example, Koumadoraki (2023, para. 13) suggests the following tips for eLearning Courses:
Explain core concepts by providing the basics and adding more advanced information.
Provide the information in chunks.
Present information when the students are ready for it and have additional information ready for on-demand consumption.
Create a safe place for learners to experiment and practice their learning.
Choose activities that require minimum mental effort.
Remove unnecessary information that doesn’t provide an educational purpose.
Remove distractions and add white space to create a calm course environment.
Use bold and highlights to direct learners to important information.
Be mindful of how much media you are using.
Use images to add to your written material and enhance learning.
Use plain language as it helps with cognitive disabilities like dyslexia or ADHD.
