Digital Art: Blend Modes

In digital art, you can add certain layers called blend modes. Blend modes alter the colors of the layers underneath them. A few of the most well-known and commonly used blend modes are Screen, Multiply, Add, and Overlay. They can be used to achieve lighting effects or bring out color.

Below is a comparison of a drawing with and without blend modes. In this example, blend modes are used to create lighting effects using the modes Screen and Multiply.

While blend modes are great for stunning lighting effects and surface level color grading, I want to learn how to achieve the same effects without actually using them. This way, I can also achieve the same effects in traditional art.
