The following information is based on student performance on the 2022-2023 TNReady assessments and the NWEA assessments. It is important to keep in mind that any assessment is a snapshot of student performance and is only part of the "big picture" of what our students are truly capable of.  While there are bright spots in the data, the district acknowledges that there is room to improve and has implemented a robust plan of improvement to meet the needs of every student. We are confident in our excellent teachers and staff and will continue to work to ensure that every student grows and achieves.

Challenges

The COVID-19 pandemic presented many challenges for schools. Many students and teachers missed weeks of classroom instruction due to illness. Some students are coming to school over a year behind academically. It takes a lot of resources and time to get these students caught up to grade level.

Since 2020, OSSD's enrollment has increased by ~16%. For a small district, this is a huge amount. Beginning with the '23-24 school year, caps on enrollment were put into place due to the large number of new students and limited space.

We have also experienced an increase in the number of students with disabilities, English Language Learners, and homeless students.

Students have a wide range of needs. While a school's primary purpose is to address the academic needs of students, we must address the "whole-child" in order for our students to be able to learn. This includes basic needs such as clothing, food, and hygiene products, to mental health counseling, a place to live, and healthcare services. Many students rely on our schools for these "whole-child" services.

Plans for Improvement

The district is partnering with the National Institute for Excellence in Teaching (NIET) to assist district and school leaders with identifying areas of strength and areas to improve regarding instructional practices. Teachers will be provided with high-quality professional development to help them improve planning, instruction, assessment, and remediation.

Each school has created an Instructional Leadership Team consisting of administrators and teachers who will work together to identify areas that need to be improved. The teams will develop and implement instructional strategies aimed at improving instruction and student achievement. High-quality instructional materials will continue to be adopted and implemented in all classrooms.

Students will have access to multiple resources to address their individual learning needs. Tutoring through TN All Corps & the Niswonger Foundation will be provided, along with after-school programs. RTI services will continue to address student needs in reading and mathematics.  Enrichment courses will provide students with supports to address specific learning needs and with access to courses that will help to prepare them for the ACT and for college/career pathways.

Teachers will have access to multiple resources to address the individual learning needs of students. Each teacher will receive $500 in classroom supply money to purchase things needed for their classrooms.  Professional development & strengths-based feedback will be provided to ensure that teachers are growing professionally and have the skills necessary to meet the challenges they face.

Schools cannot do it alone...

We have great schools, great teachers, and great support staff, but these people can't effectively educate our students without the support and assistance of families and the community. We must have high expectations of all our students.

Families can support students by working with them at home. Reading at home is vital to a child's development. Students must see that their family is interested in their education and that education is valued and important. We need families to be supportive of our schools and teachers by encouraging their students to always do their best, and by making sure students are in school every day unless they are ill.

Our community can support students by sponsoring our teams and programs. Oneida has a very supportive community that has always taken an active role in our schools. Thank you!
