A referral for mental health support should be considered when you believe a student’s problems go beyond your experience and expertise.
The following are recognizable indicators to refer for targeted or intensive, individualized mental health supports:
Marked decline in school performance
Prolonged depression suggested by a sad demeanor, apathy, weight loss, lack of sleep, extreme tearfulness
Nervousness, anxiety, agitation, excessive worry, irritability, aggressiveness
Signs of excessive alcohol or drug use
Binging or purging of food, significant or unexplained weight loss
Withdrawal from friends or social isolation
Physical or sexual assault
Suicidal ideation
