The cyclones which hit the Western Bay of Plenty in 2017 caused a major slip at the top of McDonnell Street in Omokoroa.
As a result the two houses at 37 and 39 were red stickered and subsequently removed.
This left the ground uneven and unfenced leaving a dangerous drop on the seaward side.
With its stunning views and an adjacent walkway, local residents saw the potential for a shared, safe community space.
In 2024, 'Friends of Bramley Reserve' submitted a proposal to Western Bay of Plenty District Council to create a community reserve in order to create a safe green area for the community to rest, play, enjoy the views and to pick fruit.
The proposal was finally approved in 2025 and the site was graded with 40 tons of additional topsoil.
It was grassed, fenced and planted with plum and citrus trees. A picnic table built by the local Menzshed was also installed.
Funding is currently being sought to complete the project with the addition of side fences, signs and the planting of a native tree to give shade over the seating area.
The area is maintained by the Friends of Bramley and especially appreciated by those who wish to find a quiet place for their lunch or a chance to take in the spectacular sunset views.
