Greg Golka – Head Coach ( Pole Vault):
Greg has been at Marian since 2001. In addition to teaching Theology and serving as the Chair of the Theology Department, he has been an assistant coach in Cross Country. He was an Assistant Track coach for five years and has been the Head Coach since 2007. Before coming to Marian, he coached at Grand Island (pole vault), Grand Island Central Catholic (Jr. High jumps, hurdles, and sprints), Chadron (sprints, jumps), and Kearney Catholic (pole vault). This is his 30th year coaching track. He has coached two all class gold medalists, both of whom set state records, and numerous state qualifiers and state meet medal winners. In high school, he attended Grand Island Central Catholic, where he was a sprinter and pole vaulter in track, qualifying for the state meet twice. He also competed in football and wrestling earning 7 varsity letters in those three sports. Greg is married to Tiffany and they have three daughters, Josie, Sophie and Addie.
Roger Wright (distance):
Roger competed in track and cross country for Seward High School and for Nebraska Wesleyan University. He has served as the Head Boys Track Coach at Sutton and as the Head Boys Cross Country and Head Girls Track Coach at Valley all in the 1970’s and early 1980’s. He retired from teaching here at Marian in 2017 and in that time he served as the Head Track Coach from 1982-91 and the Head Cross Country Coach from 1986 to the present in addition to teaching Mathematics. Roger is one of the most successful and most respected coaches in Nebraska history. His Cross Country teams have won seven state championships, nine Metro Conference championships, and eleven district championships. He has had twenty individuals place at the State Cross Country meet. He has been named the Metro Girls Cross Country coach of the year seven times, the Nebraska state Girls Cross Country coach of the year twice, and in 2008 he was named the National Girls Cross Country coach of the year (one of the few ever from Nebraska). This is his tenth year back coaching track after nineteen years. He and his wife, Janet, are empty nesters, but they are still very close to their five children: Melissa (’04 Marian graduate), Eric, Justin, Meghan (’02 Marian graduate), and Ashley (’06 Marian graduate). They even get the satisfaction of spoiling their four grandchildren, Lily, Kaia, Henry, and Isaac.
