In the senior unit we work hard to help develop students' independence and leadership skills in preparation for secondary school.

My name is Danielle Ford and I’m so excited to be teaching Grade Six again! This will be my 7th year teaching at OLSH and my 5th year teaching Grade Six. Unfortunately I won't be here for the whole year as I will be heading of on maternity leave in Term Two as I prepare to welcome my first child!
I have a wonderful fiancè Steven, two dogs named Monty and Mac and two cats named George and Raffy. I’m really looking forward to getting to know you and working with your child.

This year students will be heading to Roses Gap for school camp in Term Two. This will take place from Tuesday 28th - Friday 31st of May. More information about camp will be available soon. “Homework” has become a chore for many families and is a source of frustration for teachers, as there is inconsistency in the number of students who complete tasks at home and a lot of time is spent following up on missed work.
Last year as a school we revisited the purpose of this work and made some decisions about what we regard as most valuable when it comes to how students learn at home.
In all year levels, you will see that reading at home is essential – in fact, reading should not even be considered “homework” as it is one of the most important elements of your child’s learning and flows into all other learning areas. We look forward to your support with this new approach.
Below are our expectations for Grade Five and Six students:
20 mins reading each week day and at least once over the weekend
Times tables practice with a focus on 6, 7, 8 and 9 multiplication facts
At times students will also be sent home with some “finishing off” of projects
If at any time you think your child would benefit from extra practise at home, please contact me and I will arrange some work for them on request.
Alternatively there are free online programs students can access at home by clicking the links. If you need any of the passwords I can send those home.
