Hello! I'm excited to introduce myself as the Grade 5 teacher for 2024. It is my second year at Our Lady of the Sacred Heart School. Prior to moving to Mildura in 2018, I taught extensively in the Northern Territory in places including Jabiru, Katherine and Tennant Creek. I have three teenage children and together we enjoy travelling and exploring the beautiful parks and waterways around Mildura. I love spending time in the garden and have really enjoyed working with our OLSH students to fill our school garden with beautiful flowers and vegetables that we can cook or eat raw...and share with the chickens of course!

English/Literacy

Approximately 2 hours each day is spent learning English (literacy). This includes reading, writing, speaking and listening, spelling and handwriting.

In Term 1 we are reading and writing to learn about how living things have structural features and adaptations that help them survive in their environment. We will read factual texts and write interesting and informative sentences and paragraphs. We will develop our vocabulary related to the topic. Each week we will practice cursive writing joins and also work on touch typing.

Maths

Daily Maths lessons go for 1 hour. We use the Stepping Stones resource to explore Number and Algebra, Measurement and Geometry, and Statistics and Probability. A big focus in Term 1 will be place value and basic number facts. Revision and extension activities are available on Mathletics which students can access at home. Students have their login details in their home diary. Students are encouraged to spend a little time each afternoon practicing their times tables.

Home learning

A small amount of reading and revision at home after school are very beneficial for students. Below are our school's home learning expectations for Grade Five and Six students:

20 mins reading each week day and at least once over the weekend.
Times tables practice.
At times students will also be sent home with some “finishing off” of projects.
