Spanish Curriculum

Elementary grades focus on learning short prayers, songs, vocabulary words, and simple grammatical structures. Children's literature, poetry, and puppet conversations reinforce listening and speaking skills. Students learn about various Hispanic cultures by studying saints, celebrating Catholic holidays, making handicrafts, and singing traditional songs.

Middle school students use the textbook "Realidades" and focus on listening, speaking, reading, and writing in Spanish. Students have Spanish class three times a week, and homework is given on a regular basis. The work is more rigorous at the middle school level; most students are expected to place into Spanish Level II in ninth grade. Cultural studies are always an integral part of learning Spanish. Middle school students will recite prayers, sing Christmas carols, try authentic Hispanic recipes, perform skits, and make crafts.
