Raising Innovative learners

If there is one common denominator amongst the world’s most successful entrepreneurs, it would be innovation. Not just in the sense of inventing a new technology or product, but finding creative solutions to age-old problems or a new way of looking at the world. Looking at it from another perspective, innovation is also key to business growth and sustainability. It’s the innovative entrepreneurs who keep their businesses ahead of the game and adapting to the world ahead of them. Being innovative isn’t a gift bestowed on a lucky few, but a muscle one needs to exercise as early as possible.

By encouraging curiosity around the house, we are in essence associating questioning positively. The more the children are exposed to new ideas and perspectives, the greater motivation they will have to continue learning and diving deeper into the subject. In general, encouraging children to ask questions and positively reinforcing their natural curiosity will give them a life skill that can set them apart in any given task. If we want our kids to think critically then we can help them by asking open-ended questions, giving them space to discover how things work, and develop their own hypotheses and ideas on the world around them.

Innovation does not come out of the blue, it requires some sort of inspiration to get things started. Much like we need fruits and vegetables for a healthy diet, young minds need healthy mental stimulation. Creating an environment where our children are exposed to inspirational sparks, whether it be literacy or nature, can get them hooked on seeking these triggers. Getting our children out on nature walks or encouraging them to read can give their young minds much needed mental stimulation. Any activity that requires utilizing all of their senses and thinking caps can shape their mindset for years to come.

Innovators are risk takers, they stood by their ideas when everyone else warned them otherwise. It takes more than a strong sense of self-confidence and positivity to take risks, it also requires a healthy relationship with failure. When our children face failure in their tasks, they can either learn from it and do better next time or let it overcome them, creating a self-fulfilling cycle that is difficult to escape. When our children go through difficult times or when they’ve made a decision that failed to pay off, we need to guide them to help realize there are valuable lessons to be had. This will help them develop a better grasp the concept of risk taking. This must be done at a healthy distance so they can come to this realization independently and better weigh their decisions in the future eventually gaining self confidence.

Self-confidence can make them positive thinkers who always look at challenges as problems to be solved versus obstacles that can’t be overcome. Even if they do fail in their attempts, they would look at failure as something to learn from, rather than be defeated by it.

NURSERY - STREAM - Pass the ball through tunnel

STREAM learning can support children's early math development and many other important skills. Young children enjoy exploring the world through STREAM (Science, Technology, Reading and research, Engineering, Art, Math). Games are Fun and they help learners to learn various skills . Our Nursery learners engaged to play games by using construction paper and a ball. They were told to construct tunnels with the help of construction paper on the floor. With anticipation, our learners waited to throw the ball. Once they got a clue from the teacher that without touching the tunnel, the ball should pass another tunnel, they were very careful to throw the ball and eager to see how ball is passing from one tunnel to another. Such learning engagements develop their engineering skills, emotions, creativity and social skills. Through this, they can learn essential skills such as problem solving, working with others, sharing and much more.

ART - nursery - house OF SHAPES

Our nursery learners used their artistic skill to make houses using their creativity and thinking skills. They were asked to draw a house with shapes. Learning shapes helps children identify and organize visual information. They drew a triangle as roof, then drew a big square joined with the triangle, they used small squares as window and rectangle in the center as a door. They followed the instructions and coloured it as per their choice. The final product was a beautiful house.

By doing such type of learning engagement, learners develop their motor skills, language skills, social skills, decision-making, risk-taking, and inventiveness.

math - nursery - Square shape

Learning shapes not only helps children identify and organize visual information, it helps them learn skills in other curriculum areas including reading, math, and science. ... Learning shapes also helps children understand other signs and symbols.

Our nursery learners were introduced to the square shape through a fun and play way method. The square topic began with reciting a rhyme - “ This shape has four same sides “ by imitating proper action. Square has same 4 sides and 4 corners too. Through Magic box some square shaped real objects were shown to them and a presentation related to square shape was showcased for the better understanding. They were asked to get square shape objects and saying its name like- this is square shape napkin. As they know the patterns of standing and sleeping lines, they drew square shapes independently and coloured it. They also learnt to compare different shapes and group similar shapes together.

This engaging activity made our learners more confident and independent. Also this activity taught our young learners to use observational skills in exploring shapes with variations and gave them good eye-hand coordination skills.

Math - junior kg - Oval Shape

From an early age, kids notice different shapes even if they don’t know that the shapes have names. It takes longer for young children to learn the specific properties of each shape, such as the number of sides or how the shape looks. Giving pre-schooners lots of practice with shapes helps them solidify their understanding of the two-dimensional structures. That knowledge of shapes gives the young children an advantage in many areas of learning.

Our junior kg learners were introduced to a new shape that was OVAL Shape.

A shape which has no straight sides and no corners, but it does have 1 face, which can be traced or seen as a flat shape when looked at. Our Learners had hands on experience while doing an interesting Engagement where they created animal prints using thumb print. Our learners created oval shape with different house hold items.

This activity helped them to improve their eye hand coordination, fine motor skills, an effective learning techniques which help our young birds to develop verbal, communicative and cognitive skill.

Horticulture - junior kg - water plants

Horticulture is the care of gardens and plants. Horticulturists focus on ways to improve plants and ways of growing them, including various techniques. Horticulture is a science as well as the art of production, utilization, and improvement of horticultural crops. Horticultural plants require utmost care while planting.

We at Olive Trails take care of overall development of our learners. This time we tried an engagement for Horticulture that was WATER PLANTS.

For the activity our learners first took a pot then they had filled it with some gravels then some garden soil. After that they filled the pot more than half with water. Then they planted the water plants like money plant, lettuce, water lily with their tiny hands. The learners thoroughly enjoyed the planting activity and were happy to try something new.

Gardening develops new skills including: Responsibility– from caring for plants. Understanding– as they learn about cause and effect (for example, plants die without water, weeds compete with plants) Self-confidence

National Virtual Sports Day

Sports not only help in developing physical and mental health, it also develops the social skills and life skills of a student's personality.

National Sports day marks the birth anniversary of hockey wizard, Major Dhyan Chand. He was born on 29th August, 1905 at Allahabad. Sports Day helps learners to explore their hidden sports interests as they enjoy a healthy competition with each other. It is an important event as it encourages the significance of physical exercise for the learners. Physical activities increase metabolism and are good for health. More than the physical activity, such events help learners build confidence and social skills and also teach them the benefits of goal-setting and practice.

Our learners at Olive Trials School celebrated Virtual National Sports day on

31st August 2021. Our all 3 grades learners played various games like pick the socks with your feet, aim the glass pyramid, picking paper balls with toes, put the ribbon in bottle, and many more.
