Language of behavior and emotions in kids

Children and young people’s language development is important for their emotional development, behavior, and mental health. The ability of young children to manage their emotions and behaviors is an important prerequisite for social adjustment and school readiness. With an increase in early-onset behavioral difficulties in children, understanding changes in child behavior during the preschool years and the factors that influence it is a priority for policy and practice

We often see problems starting between children and young people because of verbal misunderstandings and problems with managing their emotions. These can then escalate because they can’t negotiate or repair the miscommunication. Sometimes things get even worse because adults try to resolve things using language that the children and young people can understand. Other children and young people who struggle to understand language become withdrawn and struggle to explain how they feel or what support they need. Also, talking therapies, accessing mentoring, and managing behavior all require language and communication skills.

Although there are many children and young people with social, emotional, and mental health needs who have speech, language, and communication needs there are very few specific tools for practitioners which will help them to develop children and young people’s language, emotional, and thinking skills. Empowering your child to say how they feel and understand that it is okay to feel that way is one of the strongest ways you can prepare them for difficult situations in life.

By modeling, labeling, and practicing talking about your child’s feelings, they will grow in their ability to recognize how they are feeling and be able to communicate it to you. As your child gets older, this will help them cope and problem-solve difficult situations.

Classroom Connection

It’s important to understand how students’ emotions impact their attention, engagement, and what they learn. To ensure meaningful learning, we have to understand the learner's mind, help them to leverage their strengths, identify and work towards goals that matter to them, and ensure they persist through challenges and setbacks. To achieve this it's important for building strong relationships first and maintaining them throughout the learning process. Such bonding is developed only by having positive conversations with the students. When you authentically praise a student or have a positive interaction, the student’s brain releases dopamine. The student feels good and starts building confidence in oneself.

English

English is the language of science, aviation, computers, diplomacy, and tourism. It is the main language for studying any subject all over the world. English is important for students as it broadens their minds develops emotional skills, improves their quality of life by providing job opportunities. Our students are going to meet thousands of people in their life; a good command of English will help them to communicate with others in the most impactful manner. Once a student becomes adroit in English, no barrier could stop him from learning more and becoming more educated. As we move ahead with the sequencing of letters, the letters Q, R, S, T, U, V, W, X, Y, Z were written on a red and blue line loose sheet. Most of the students attempted to write independently.

Math

Learning numbers is an essential component of early childhood education. Maths skills taught during the early years are designed to provide the foundation a child needs to succeed in elementary school and beyond. Number sense or the basics of learning numbers. Learners are naturally visual and can build a relation between a number and a represented item. Learning Math is important for learners. It gives them the confidence to explore and develop an understanding of the world around them.

This week our little Learners did oral counting of numbers 1 to 9 and then wrote numbers in the square line book. Learners wrote very well with neat and clean handwriting.

Theme

Listening to stories stimulates a child's curiosity and imagination endlessly. Fantasy is the key to exploration and creative thinking. By listening to stories, children get to hear many new words, thus they become familiar with new vocabulary. A growing vocabulary will enable your child to express herself clearly and well. Also, stories play a crucial role in developing your child's social and emotional skills. Children often struggle with difficult emotions such as sadness, anger, jealousy, and frustration. Weaving these emotions into a story is a safe way to get your child to understand his feelings and learn to regulate them, the way the characters do in the story. Stories instill values too. Stories help a child imbibe values in an enjoyable and stress-free manner. A story with good morals, values, or qualities like a caring thinker, confidence, etc remains etched in a child's memory, for a long time.

Story with quality of risk-taker was narrated to the learners for this week where they learned to take chances or risks to bring the best out of themselves and learn to believe in themselves.

With the physical exercise, they improve many skills like teamwork, leadership skills, decision making, etc. keeping this in mind, the sports teacher started the session with warmup exercises like jumping, hopping, jogging, running, etc. Then the teacher did the different exercises with number count and energetic music. Learners enjoyed doing the exercise along with the music. This exercise helped them develop motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and thinking power.

ART

Art builds self-confidence in a way that learners need. It develops their listening skills and an ability to work from part to whole. Learners express themselves through art on a fundamental level. Creating art allows learners to work through feelings and emotions, and referring to a finished piece of artwork helps a child talk about their feelings in a new and meaningful way. Art also develops a child’s creativity and artistic activities that foster intellectual development. It also stimulates both sides of the brain and increases their capacity for memory, attention, and concentration. In this session, the teacher gave a recapitulation of the different shapes taught to them by drawing them on the board with their related objects for eg Circle- Bangle, Triangle- Pizza Slice, Square – Handkerchief, etc, and then after the learners were allowed to draw the shapes they like with its related objects, which they did best by drawing it in their drawing book.

Classroom Connection

Children learn best when they feel connected to their teachers. When kids feel that their teacher cares for them and wants them to succeed, they work harder, pay better attention, and persist through challenges.

English

Recapitulation of reading and writing of three-letter words bun, fun, and sun was done in the notebook. Dictation is a great tool for teaching spelling because it allows children to use their spelling skills in a “real world” application. Simply put, you say a phrase or sentence containing their spelling words, and students repeat it and write it down. The teacher had dictated some three-letter words like rub, mug, fun, cut, bug, tub, cub, nut, sun, and hut they were asked to write dictation words in their notebook. This activity helped them to develop eye-hand coordination and thinking power. Stories help the learners to inculcate good habits in an engaging and lively manner to develop their life skills. Listening to stories sparks the learner’s imagination and stimulates curiosity to help them focus and concentrate on social and communication skills. Recap of the story – River and his friends was narrated with the help of puppets where the teacher explained the moral along with the story. After imagining and listening to the story, learners were able to think and answer the story-related questions asked by the teacher. They also tried to sequence the story using their imagination and thinking skills.

Virtual field trip.

Virtual field trips create enriching, interactive experiences that cater to students of all learning styles and expose them to diverse perspectives. "It's an opportunity to explore the world, cultures, and anything that is not readily available in your local community.

A virtual field trip for learners is the opportunity to explore and see places, things, and people not normally seen on a typical classroom day and this is an opportunity to see and experience the world without ever leaving the classroom.

Jr..Kg learners enjoyed a virtual trip to Lola’s Cupcakes Bakery with Georgia’s Cakes. The video was showcased to the learners where they were able to learn about dry ingredients, how much quantity of butter, sprinklers, and different flavors of cream to be used to decorate yummy and delicious cupcakes. They were asked driving questions about the cupcakes bakery. Learners enjoyed the cupcake bakery tour.

Math

Good number sense helps children manipulate numbers to make calculations easier and gives them the confidence to be flexible in their approach to solving problems. Children who develop number sense can assess how reasonable an answer is, and routinely estimate answers before calculating. Knowing how to write numbers as words is important for crafting professional articles and academic papers. The teacher took the recap of numbers 1 to 50 and number names 1 to 10 with the help of the flashcards and the learners wrote the same in their notebooks.

Theme

Students need to be engaged in the classroom for meaningful learning to occur. RECAP is a student-centered strategy designed to reinforce student learning. Acronym RECAP stands for: R-Read/Recall class materials; EC-Engage in discussions, and group. Activities in class; A-Apply what was learned in class via exams, assignments, projects; P- Progress/Performance as determined by course grade.

Classroom connection

Connecting with kids on several fronts has a huge impact on learners feelings of emotional safety, level of engagement, and ultimately academic achievement. Involving learners before content is the first step for making major strides toward positive connections. Good relationships can help learners to develop a growth mindset, encourage kindness in the classroom, increase student’s self-confidence and make the class more welcoming.

English

Short English stories are perfect for children learning English . Young children enjoy reading, writing, and listening to stories, and from the stories, they are able to understand more about society and life in general. This week a story map strategy was used to help our students learn the elements of the story for The oak tree and the reeds story. By drawing the beginning, middle, and end of the story (BME)plot of the story they were able to recall and retell extending the story as per their understanding. Our tiny tots were very happy and excited to draw the pictures using their imagination and thinking skills.

Literacy circle

Literacy skills are all the skills needed for reading and writing. They include awareness of the sounds of language, print, and the relationship between letters and sounds. This week's digital reader book 'Noses are not for picking' was done where learners have imbibed the life learning skill of not having the nose-picking habit with the importance of taking care of their nose through reading the book, this helped enhance our learner's vocabulary skills and reading comprehension.

Math

Helping learners recapitulate or recall what they have already learned is important because relating new information to prior knowledge enhances learning. It is an effective way of revising old lessons. It also enhances the memory of learners thereby strengthening learning.

This week learners had recapitulation on topics of Shapes and subtraction. Kids have dynamic learning capabilities that are enhanced by their observation skills. However, we need to take tiny steps while teaching them. Basic shapes impact children. They try to understand their surroundings by looking at the different objects around them. All kinds of objects and structures help kids in learning shapes. They were shown different 2D and 3D shapes and were asked to recognize them and give one example for the same. Learners also did subtraction in the Horizontal and Vertical method by drawing objects. This method helps to understand the concept more clearly.

Theme

Recapitulation is beneficial to both the students and the teachers. The students have a better understanding and profound knowledge of the concepts and facts taught in the class through recap sessions. It’s beneficial for assessing and tracking the progress of the students. It also helps in memorization. A recap of seasons was done through a ‘Y’ chart where learners expressed their understanding of seasons (rainy, summer, and winter). They drew relevant pictures of clothes, and food from different seasons. They enjoyed the activity as well as refreshed their knowledge.

Role-play plays an important role in a child’s development. It builds confidence, creativity, and communication skills among children. Along with being a fun activity it also gives children an opportunity to get into the character and act out real-life or fictional performances. Learners actively participated in the role-play of seasons. They shared their knowledge and creativity during the session.

Curious explorer

People go hiking because they are tired of the city and ready to go on an adventure. Camping helps develop problem-solving, innovator, inventor, independent, logical, and technically savvy life skills. Camping can help you live longer and healthier. Camping offers significant health benefits through fresh air, socialization, uplifting zones, stress reduction, exercise, sunlight, new challenges, and meditation. Students created Let`s Pack, one of the most important camping activities. Where students explain why we camp and how it helps us. The teacher first asked the students if they knew anything about camping, and surprisingly, many children were willing to share their camping knowledge with the teachers. Then the learners prepared pencils and paper and the teacher asked what they needed for the hike. After the discussion, the students prepared a checklist for hiking. And later the teacher asked them why they chose these particular things. The teacher also added some resources and shared information about why these are important for camping.

Read Aloud Activity “Curious George goes camping” is done with the learners. A healthy discussion was held with the learners about camping to improve language development and communication skills. Students were very excited to discuss this story and share their knowledge with teachers.

STREAM

STREAM is designed to be an integrated approach to learning, one where students are prompted to think critically and beyond about the world and problems around them. Students become involved in hands-on projects where problem-solving, collaboration and the results of their efforts make lessons more implacable.

During this STREAM session, learners enjoyed doing Reverse coloring activity, in which they got opportunities to explore their creativity, they were allowed to paint whatever comes to their minds. In this session, students made different artwork as per their imagination by using watercolor and brushes. Continued with an outline or different patterns with marker or sketch pens on the same artwork to complete their Reverse painting artwork.

Working with a brush and painting helped enhance our tiny tots' fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination. Overall they enjoyed doing the activity a lot.

Music

Music ignites all areas of child development and skills, including intellectual, social-emotional, motor, language, and overall literacy. It helps the body and mind work together. Exposing children to music during early development helps them learn the sounds and meanings of words. They like songs that repeat words and melodies. They aren’t self-conscious about their ability, and most are eager to let their voices roar. Learners had a practice session for Graduation Day and had the dynamic experience of learning the prayer song "Hey Bhagavan do vardan".
