Our topic this term - Pupil Parliament

Language, Literacy and Communication

During the Autumn term year 5 will be developing their diary writing skills by writing a diary in role as the main character Joe from our class book 'The Accidental Prime Minister'. Children are more than welcome to read this book online through google classroom in advance of our lessons. It would be useful for children to read aloud to develop fluency and accuracy. Children will also be reading this book as part of teacher led guided reading sessions where they will develop inference and comprehension skills.

In addition to written tasks, children will will also be creating their own election speeches to perform. Children will have the opportunity to write about what they would change and incorporate into government if they became prime minister. Children will perform these speeches in front of one another to gain confidence and appropriate oracy skills when talking to an audience.

Pupils will continue to take part in Accelerated Reader, daily guided reading sessions, spelling investigations as well as comprehension and grammar tasks.

Mathematics

During this term children will be focusing on the mathematical areas: addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, decimals, place value, comparing numbers, understanding simple fraction and decimal equivalence, proportion, inverse, rounding before moving on to calculating angles, shapes and associated geometry skills.

In addition to the curriculum mathematics, year 5 will also be developing their problem solving and reasoning skills through weekly investigations, this will allow pupils to improve their use of mathematical language as well as their ability to work independently.

Over the term we will be regularly revisiting basic skills to ensure all children are confident and competent in multiplication, division, addition and subtraction.

Children should be regularly practicing their times tables at home, devoting 15 minutes a day to learn from memory.

Other Curriculum Areas

As part of the pupil parliament topic, year 5 will be researching the structure of parliament and the people who represent and help us locally. Children will undertake their own election, where they will run their own campaigns, including the marketing and media. Children will be lobbying throughout the school to gain votes for their election team. We will then hold a candidate debate and pre election speeches.

During RE sessions children will be learning about leaders within our community, national and global and the importance they play in our lives. Through science, year 5 will have opportunities to engage in discussions and practical investigations about the heart, circulatory system, blood, liver and spleen and the pioneering work of William Harvey. This term in Welsh we will be focusing on leisure / hamdden, we will ask and answer questions on our favourite leisure activities.
