Our topic this term

Our overarching concept this term - School Days, Now and Then.

Welcome to the final term of Year 2. We have planned many exciting activities for the children to enjoy and explore new skills, focused on our concept of Schools Days, Now and Then. This term will also include Sports Day and our exciting Jubilee celebrations. Let the good times begin...

Language, Literacy and Communication

This term our literacy lessons will focus on the story of Matilda by Roald Dahl. We have chosen this story so that the children's activities can be linked to a variety of writing genres which will introduce them to many extended writing tasks. The story will link with our concept on school life and will encourage the children to extend their vocabulary, expose them to an exciting style of writing and hopefully encourage them to read more books as well as poetry by Roadl Dahl. We will also continue to support the children to improve their reading skills by introducing and revising sound patterns. Handwriting and grammar will also be practised through lessons that will guide them to develop and build on skills covered in previous terms.

We will build on their knowledge of the Welsh language, using extend sentences and introduce new vocabulary through the spoken word and written activities. They will experience daily Helpwr Heddiw sessions and read simple Welsh language stories.

Mathematics and Numeracy

During their numeracy lessons, the children will enjoy a range of activities some of which are listed below:-

  • Statistics- pictograms, block graphs- both digitally and in their work books, interpreting graphs and creating questions.

  • Time - reading analogue and digital clocks, seasons and months of the year.

  • Position - turning to the left, right, through 90 degrees, following directions.

  • Place Value [revision] - ones, tens, hundreds and thousands

  • Number - revise and extend knowledge of the four operations - add, subtract, multiply, divide

The children's experiences of these areas will be delivered through a variety of activities - both indoor and outdoor - using meaningful and exciting contexts to add curiosity and interest to their learning.

Other Areas of Learning and Experience

The children will experience activities centred around finding out about school life in the past and what children's lives were like if they didn't go to school. They will learn about empathy whilst exploring days gone by and realise that they need to rely on evidence and understanding, to build a picture of historical interpretations. We are hoping that the children will have opportunities to learn about other people's experiences of school life, learning about Big Pit [exploring how children worked underground] and the Museum of Welsh Life [St Fagan's.]

They will enjoy physical activities to practise skills needed for Sport's Day and enhance their well-being.

Thrive - Emotional and Social Development

Within our classroom we will be encouraging the children to take age appropriate responsibility whilst continuing to be clear, firm and compassionate.

Activities will provide opportunities for children to take different levels of responsibility for a range of tasks. We will also be creating situations with different roles, to explore situations from each person's perspective.

Things to remember

PE is on a Monday this term.

Each child will have a designated reading day during which they will undertake an Accelerated Reader quiz based on their book. Please ensure reading books are bought in on these days.

Please ensure all school uniform and water bottles are clearly labelled with your child's name.
