Language, Literacy and Communication
At the start of the term, we have been reviewing and recapping our knowledge of phonics, and blending and segmenting words. We will continue to use the Read Write Inc. scheme to consolidate these skills daily throughout the term.
We will also use the Literary Tree Curriculum for Primary Schools as our scheme for literacy lessons. This book-based approach uses high-quality texts to foster a love of stories.
Our first story will be 'Cave Baby' by Julia Donaldson. We will be exploring the text, looking at the various animals and joining in as the text is read. The children will be retelling the story, using puppets and writing sentences to sequence the story.
Our second book will be 'The Sea Saw' by Tom Percival, We will be writing in role, notes of advice, missing posters, diary entry, letter of thanks. Our main outcome will be to create our own version of the narrative of the story.
We will also encourage reading through shared story times throughout the day.
We will be continuing individual reading books and will be reading with the children weekly; they will need to bring in their bookbags on their reading day. If your child has finished reading their book before their reading day, you can encourage them to read other books available at home or practise writing sentences from their school reading book.
Children will be participating in daily Helpwr Heddiw sessions to develop their understanding of Welsh. We will be encouraging the use of incidental Welsh around the classroom and school. They will be learning question and answer patterns such as 'Sut wyt ti? (How are you?) and 'Beth sy'n bod?' (What's the matter?) Children will be encouraged to respond and ask questions through stories, songs and rhymes.
Mathematics and Numeracy
This term, in Year 1 we will be focussing on using a practical approach to build upon and develop previously taught mathematical skills. Maths teaching will involve whole-class and small-group based sessions, which will include a wide variety of practical and engaging activities.
We will be reinforcing accurate counting skills involving objects to 10, 20 and beyond. Children will be using touch-counting, grouping and ten frames to develop accuracy.
The children will be learning number bonds to 10 and exploring the concept of place value using practical and pictorial methods.
Another particular focus of this term is to recognise repeating patterns, and identify and describe 3D and 2D shapes within our environment.
Health and Wellbeing
Children will also have the opportunity to explore further the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC) and what this means to them.
This term, Year 1 will continue to focus on building relationships, friendships and displaying kindness to those around them.
During our enrichment sessions, we will be undertaking a variety of activities that engage and excite children.
Other Areas of Learning and Experience
Children will take part in a range of outdoor learning, as well as Welsh lessons to develop their Welsh speaking and writing skills. The outdoor learning will allow children to enhance their problem-solving skills, communication, resilience, exploration, experimentation, and developing contextual learning.
In our afternoon sessions across the week, we will be focusing on the concepts identity and change. Within our Unit of Work : Exploring the Past, we will be looking at ourselves, our family and the community we live in. We will focus on changes from the past, comparing similarities and differences as well as looking at the life of the Romans and how they have impacted on our lives today! Throughout this unit of work, we will create a range of different crafts, literacy pieces and investigations.
Things to remember
Children should bring a water bottle to school each day.
Children can bring fruit each day.
P.E. will be on a Monday. Children should attend school in the agreed P.E. kit on this day.
We have a number of children in school with a nut allergy. We strive to be a nut-free school so please do not send in nut products in packed lunches such as nutella.
Thank you for your continued help and support,
