Welcome to the Autumn term in Nursery! This term will be spent getting to know our new friends, teachers and our school.  The children will explore their new learning environment, and we will discuss our classroom expectations, rules and routines. This term, our overarching theme as a school is Human Kind, where we will explore identity, diversity and discrimination.  As part of this theme in the Nursery, we will begin to think all about ourselves, our identities and what makes us unique. We will learn about friendships, family and caring for others. The children will develop their social skills by playing alongside each other and cooperatively responding to adults and peers.

Language, Literacy and Communication

Language and Literacy skills will be developed throughout all sessions and activities within our day.  Children will be encouraged to discuss and describe their feelings, activities and ideas.  Clear speech is modelled and vocabulary is extended through all of our tasks.  Stories and poems will be shared and enjoyed daily.

The children will begin to learn individual sounds, words beginning with that sound, and how to form the letter.   Information on the sounds being taught and how to form the sounds correctly will be sent home regularly.  We will be using the Read, Write, Inc. phonics programme.

The children will also develop their fine motor skills through varied activities.  They will write in sand, shaving foam, and use pencils and crayons.  We will also develop our cutting skills.

We will begin to develop our use of incidental Welsh within the classroom through our daily activities and Helpwr Heddiw sessions.  Children will be encouraged to respond and ask questions through stories, songs, and rhymes.

Mathematics and Numeracy

Mathematics is used as part of our daily routines.  The children will be immersed in number activities, from discussing how many children are in school to focused maths activities.  We will use numicon to help them explore numbers and counting, working inside the classroom and outside.

Children will be given opportunities to explore all aspects of maths, including number, shape and data.  We will investigate the concept of numbers and extend their mathematical vocabulary.   Children will begin to recite up to 10 forwards and backwards using songs and rhymes.

Children will also be encouraged to compare and order numbers up to 5 or 10 and will be taught to use one-to-one correspondence to help them count.  The children will be encouraged to make marks to represent numbers in their play and to record collections.

Other Areas of Learning and Experience

This term, we will focus on settling the children into school, developing a routine and helping them to make new friends.

Our unit of work in the Autumn Term is 'Who am I?' During this time, we will be learning about ourselves and our families using our All About Me Books.  We will be creating self-portraits using various creative materials.

In other areas of the curriculum, we will continue to develop their fine and gross motor skills through a range of focused, enhanced, and continuous activities.  The children will be encouraged to explore and investigate the world around them, both indoors and outdoors, while using a hands-on approach.  During morning sessions, the children will participate in music and movement activities and ball skills,  which help to develop their fine and gross motor skills and develop listening skills.  The children will also use the outdoor environment to develop their learning.

Thrive - Emotional and Social Development

Oldcastle Primary School is fortunate to have adopted ‘Thrive’, a therapeutic approach to help support children with their emotional and social development.

Children will take part in group activities to support them in building friendships, taking turns, sharing and being good friends in class. Children are praised for showing manners, caring for one another and listening to and following instructions.

Things to remember

Please ensure that all of your child's personal effects are labelled; this includes water bottles, fruit pots, jumpers and coats.

Please ensure that water bottles contain water, not squash or fruit juice.

Please could all parents ensure that they regularly check their child's spare clothes bag to ensure clothes are available should an accident occur.

If you are not personally collecting your child at the end of the school day, please make the Nursery staff aware of who will be collecting them.

We have several children in school with a nut allergy.  We strive to be a nut-free school, so please do not send in nut products in packed lunches.

Please could children wear PE kit to school on a Thursday.
