Language, Literacy and Communication
At Oldcastle we want all children to foster a love for reading and books. Within the Nursery we create a language rich environment, where the children are encouraged to develop their vocabulary, speaking and listening skills, and express themselves and their ideas.
The children will be read to daily, books will be shared and they will be encouraged to engage with the story and the characters. They will have access to books within our book corner, where they can explore books independently.
We love to sing nursery rhymes and Welsh songs, these feature regularly throughout our day and help to develop rhyme recognition and memory as well as language.
The children have free access to pencils and crayons, and are encouraged to practice mark-making and develop early writing and their fine motor skills.
We use the Read Write Inc phonics programme and through this will start to develop an awareness of sounds and letter formation.
We will begin to develop our use of incidental Welsh within the classroom through songs, our daily activities and Helpwr Heddiw sessions.
Mathematics and Numeracy
Mathematics is used as part of our daily routines, we use playful, hands on activities that help the children to explore the concept of number, patterns, shapes and spatial awareness.
The children will be immersed in numbers, from discussing how many children are in school to focused maths activities. We will use Numicon to help them explore numbers and counting, working inside and outside the classroom.
The children will begin to recite up to 10 forwards and backwards using songs and rhymes.
They will also be encouraged to compare and order numbers up to 5 or 10 and will be taught to use one-to-one correspondence to help them count. Children will also be encouraged to make marks to represent numbers in their play and to record collections.
Health and Wellbeing
Health and Well-being is extremely important to us. We want to ensure that all children have a sense of belonging, not only within our classroom but the wider school community by creating an environment that nurtures emotional security and healthy habits, where children feel valued and understood.
We will focus on helping the children to understand and express their emotions, and those of their friends, encouraging them to talk about their feelings, using books and games.
The children will be encouraged to build new friendships and develop their ability to share and take turns.
We utilise our outside environment and provide lots of opportunities for the children to explore, play and engage in daily physical activities. The children will participate in music and movement activities and ball skills, which help to develop their fine and gross motor skills and develop their listening skills.
Other Areas of Learning and Experience
This term will be spent getting to know our new friends, teachers, and school. The children will explore their new learning environment, and we will discuss our classroom expectations, rules and routines.
Through our theme of 'Humankind,' we will learn about ourselves and how we belong within our school and community. We will begin to understand who is in our family and appreciate that not all families are the same.
We will consider the people within our community who help us, such as doctors, dentists, teachers, firemen, and policemen, and gain an understanding of other people's beliefs.
Things to remember
Please ensure that all of your child's personal effects are labelled; this includes water bottles, fruit pots, jumpers and coats.
Please ensure that water bottles contain water, not squash or fruit juice. During the afternoon session, we have our fruit snacks; please could we ask that only fruit or vegetables be provided. Grapes should be cut and not kept whole.
If you are not personally collecting your child at the end of the school day, please inform the Nursery staff who will collect them.
We have several children in school with a nut allergy. We strive to be a nut-free school, so please do not send in nut products in packed lunches such as nutella.
Please could the children wear PE kit to school every Thursday.
Many thanks
The Nursery Team.
