DEFINITION OF GIFTEDNESS

The current definition of gifted students, which is located in the Elementary and Secondary Education Act, is:

Students, children, or youth who give evidence of high achievement capability in areas such as intellectual, creative, artistic, or leadership capacity, or in specific academic fields, and who need services and activities not ordinarily provided by the school in order to fully develop those capabilities.

WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU THINK THAT ONE OF YOUR STUDENTS IS GIFTED?

Gifted students receive special services, and therefore, the identification of gifted and talented students follows a specific protocol. If you believe that a student in your class is gifted, please talk to the school resources specialist or the school administration. You can also find helpful information about the gifted referral and identification process in the Gifted Referral and Identification for Gifted Populations guide below.
