"Reading is the gateway that makes all other learning possible!"
Public Schools are essential to the success of any community. No matter their zip code, all students deserve access to a world class education. Reading provides access to the fulfillment of a child’s unique purpose in a healthy, vibrant community.
According to The Nation's Report Card, 37% of children in the U.S. are reading below a basic level. What “below basic” means is that kids in fourth grade, based on the most recent NAEP assessment, are functionally illiterate. Almost 70% of low-income fourth-grade students cannot read at a basic level (as of May 2023).
In response to the nation’s crisis around literacy, OKCPS has acknowledged and is addressing every student’s right to read. We are committed to developing literate citizens through faithful implementation of systematic, evidence-based reading instruction.
