Our Literacy Plan

OKCPS is committed to increasing early childhood education opportunities and equipping our instructional staff with the proper tools to teach ALL students how to read so they will graduate ready to fulfill their unique purpose in a healthy, vibrant community.

Strategic Intents

To provide support for all students toward reading proficiency, the OKCPS Reading Plan outlines SIX STRATEGIC INTENTS to meet the goal of success in reading proficiency.

Desired Outcomes

Improve reading proficiency for all students, across all grade levels in OKCPS as measured by NWEA and OSTP scores.

This will be achieved through a district-wide Reading Plan, including interventions, professional growth, and access to quality reading materials, with ongoing progress monitoring.

Structured Literacy

Emphasizes the need to decode to become a skilled reader over time
Explicit instruction
Words are made of individual letters, sounds, and word parts
When building word recognition, language comprehension must be addressed through oral language communication

If a child reads for 20 minutes every day, they are exposed to 1.8 million words of text every year. That is 137 new words per minute!

Educators
Teachers will ensure literacy

goals are met at all grade levels.

Teacher Leaders
Teacher Leaders will guide educators in creating and maintaining literacy-rich environments.

School Leaders
School Leaders implement and sustain a literacy plan in alignment with their district and state goals.

District Leaders
District Leaders streamline initiative and monitor implementation of state and federal policies.

Family & Community
Family and community partners plan an active role in promoting and supporting literacy within the community.
