Year 10 Science New Zealand Land Formation Investigation
New Zealand enjoys varied landscape and dramatic geographical features - from cascading glaciers, to active volcanoes, from placid lakes, to vast mountain ranges. This amazing geography has made New Zealand a popular location for tourists as well as the production of television programmes and films, including The Lord of the Rings trilogy and The Hobbit trilogy.
TASK ONE
Watch the following video and make a note of each of the landscapes in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
New Zealand Landscapes Timelapse Volume Two from Bevan Percival on Vimeo.
TASK TWO
READ Formation of New Zealand landscape document (attached) AND
You'll find a variety of awesome landscapes and geographical features throughout New Zealand, all within easy reach of each other. Spectacular glaciers, picturesque fiords, rugged mountains, vast plains, rolling hillsides, subtropical forest, volcanic plateau, miles of coastline with gorgeous sandy beaches--it's all here. No wonder New Zealand is becoming so popular as a location for movies!
Lying in the south-west Pacific, New Zealand consists of two main islands--the North Island and the South Island. In addition, Stewart Island and many smaller islands lie offshore.
The North Island has a 'spine' of mountain ranges running through the middle, with gentle rolling farmland on both sides. The central North Island is dominated by the Volcanic Plateau, an active volcanic and thermal area.
The massive Southern Alps form the backbone of the South Island. To the east of the Southern Alps is the rolling farmland of Otago and Southland, and the vast, flat Canterbury Plains.
In your book list SIX common types of landscape in Aotearoa/New Zealand.
TASK THREE
Using information from the internet, particularly https://www.gns.cri.nz/Home/Learning/Science-Topics/Landforms describe how each of the following landscapes was; a) originally formed, b) has become its modern form
· Tongariro
· The Southern Alps
· Kaikohe and the Bay of Islands
Record this information in your book
TASK FOUR
Create a slideshow that explains the formation of ONE of the landscape forms from creation to now. This needs to be at least 10 slides and include details of how it has happened.
New Term 4 Week 1 Year 7-10 SCIENCE PROJECT FOR LOCKDOWN
You are to design a bird box for the particular bird at your level. Before you can even think of the bird box you will have to research the characteristics of the bird such as:
· size
· what sort of habitat it lives in i.e. what will attract it to live in your bird box
· what it eats i.e. what food can you provide that it will find attractive
· a nearby source of accessible water the bird can drink
· sufficient room for a pair to breed and raise chicks
As you want only your particular species of bird to use the bird box you will need to include in your design things that will deter other types of birds from using the bird box.
The project to be handed in must include (in any form):
· the information above (in your own words)
· a basic plan (including dimensions) of the bird box (a drawing or CAD plan is OK)
N.B. Cut and paste is NOT acceptable and will result in a fail grade.
