MODUS OPERANDI
" Thrive Connected "
Dr. Toma prefers to appreciate the human body as a complex ecosystem deserving an integrative approach toward healing. During a consultation, Dr. Toma considers the relationship between various networks within and around the body that synergistically interact, forming your unique bioindividuality.
She may explore the contributing role of trauma, nutrient and sunlight exposure, as well as the quality of your relationships, to name a few examples.
During the course of her training, Dr. Toma recognized the need for neurodivergence-informed care in psychiatry, compelling her to further specialize in the diagnosis, holistic management, and empowerment of individuals living with (and often not-yet-diagnosed) ADHD and/or Autism Spectrum Disorders.
EDUCATION & TRAINING
Dr. Toma completed a Bachelor of Science in Integrated Biomedical Science and a clinical-academic fellowship in Interventional Brain Medicine (Psychiatry) - Neurostimulation track - at the University of British Columbia (UBC), in Vancouver, Canada.
She found her passion for clinician mental health advocacy while serving at the epicenter of the COVID-19 pandemic in New York City during one of the most challenging periods in modern healthcare. This led her to spearhead a quality improvement (QI) project during her time as chief resident, which not only highlighted significant unmet mental health and wellbeing needs of medical trainees, but also served to provide individuals with meaningful insights into their own mental and physical well-being, mental health resources, and emotional support during uncertain times.
During a clinical-academic fellowship at UBC, Dr. Toma had the privilege of working with a dedicated multidisciplinary research team at the Non-Invasive Neuromodulation Therapies (NINET) laboratory. She enjoyed providing medical supervision during multiple concurrent phase three randomized clinical trials using cutting-edge Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS) protocols to target treatment-refractory depression.
She gained clinical competence evaluating and treating individuals with severe psychiatric illness using Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). She had the privilege to witness the successful implementation of a novel outpatient intramuscular ketamine intervention pilot program at UBC, and learned valuable psychodynamic skills from senior neuropsychiatrist Dr. Joseph Tham caring for the community's most treatment-refractory psychiatric illness.
Dr. Toma presented her research at various conferences including the American Psychiatric Association, the New York State Psychiatric Association, Brooklyn Psychiatric Society, Hofstra School of Law and research competition events. Dr. Toma and her colleagues won first place in One Brooklyn Health's annual research competition, Behavioral Health Division, presenting the case of a young female patient with severe recurrent schizoaffective disorder in the setting of undiagnosed PCOS, highlighting the importance of a neuroendocrine-informed approach in psychiatry.
During her fellowship, she investigated how contraceptives influences treatment outcomes in females of reproductive age with treatment-refractory depression receiving TMS.
LEADERSHIP & INNOVATION
Besides her commitment to directly empower her patients through education and encouraging self-discovery, Dr. Toma is committed to advancing psychiatric innovation in medical education. Together with globally-recognized academic-psychiatrist and director of NINET, Dr. Fidel Vila-Rodriguez, they pioneered the Interventional Brain Medicine (IBM) Fellowship Program.
Dr. Toma is also a clinical content creator, editor and lecturer for the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN) board exam preparation course, ‘Now You Know Psychiatry (NYNP)’, and co-editor of the Bright Light Therapy chapter in the 26th edition of “Clinical Handbook of Psychotropic Drugs.”
