Social Studies

Sixth grade is a very exciting year for social studies! We will be focusing on three main units, Geography, Ancient Greece, and Ancient Rome. At the beginning of the year, we will be starting with reviewing and building on skills and information taught in fifth grade, including the five themes of geography, fundamental concepts of archaeology, and timelines. In sixth grade the Connecticut Framework strands are addressed through studying the ancient civilizations of Greece and Rome. Students will gain an understanding of history and geography of these parts of the world, as well as how they can be related to modern America. These ancient civilizations come alive for students through projects, readings, class discussions, games, field trips, visual displays, etc. Our CIRCLE words are often reviewed in social studies classes as we compare and contrast cultures seemingly different from our own.
