Annual Awards
We are excited to promote behavior analysts working in Virginia public schools. These awards recognize exemplary contributions of behavior analysts in schools, as well as those that support them, and celebrate their work’s diversity across the commonwealth. Please read each award carefully as each award has variations of requirements.

VAPSBAN Practitioner Award
This award recognizes BCBA, BCaBA, RBT, and BCBA-D practitioners in good standing with the BACB, who work directly with students in a Virginia school, contributing to the advancement of behavior analysis through practice, teaching, research, and service delivery.
VAPSBAN Humanitarian Award
This award recognizes BCBA, BCaBA, RBT, and BCBA-D practioners in good standing with the BACB, that have demonstrated a commitment to inclusion, equity, and equality in a Virginia school, contributing to behavior analysis advancement.
VAPSBAN Leadership Award
This award recognizes BCBA and BCBA-D practioners in good standing with the BACB who work as a supervisor and/or trainer of other behavior analysts and school personnel to build capacity in Virginia schools.
Friends of VAPSBAN Award
The Friend of VAPSBAN Award recognizes and expresses appreciation to those individuals (with or without a credential by the BACB) who have consistently provided extraordinary support in advancing behavior analysis in Virginia public schools.
Eligibility Requirements
For All Awards:
The nominee’s work must be consistent with the purpose of the VAPSBAN as described in the first paragraph.
The nominee must be directly employed by a Virginia public school or directly by the Virginia Department of Education.
Posthumous nominations are not accepted
Be board certified/licensed in ABA (i.e BCBA, BCaBA, or RBT)
Practice in the field of ABA according to its defining dimensions (applied, behavioral, analytic, technological, conceptually systematic, effective, generality)
For the Leadership Award:
Must be a certified/licensed BCBA-D or BCBA in good standing with the BACB.
Practice in the field of ABA according to its defining dimensions (applied, behavioral, analytic, technological, conceptually systematic, effective, generality)
Serve as a supervisor and/or trainer of other behavior analysts or school personnel
Demonstrate two or more of the following criteria:
Developed and executed initiative(s) that fostered the advancement of behavior analysis skills within cohorts of division personnel
Created or contributed to an overall strategic plan to increase behavior analytic knowledge and service capacity within school or division
Developed a plan for sustainable processes and staffing allocation to further improve ABA knowledge and service provision.
Exemplified collaborative leadership (i.e. general education with special education, etc).
Other demonstrations of leadership (note)
For the Practitioner Award:
Must be a BCBA, BCaBA, RBT, BCBA-D in good standing with the BACB.
Practice in the field of ABA according to its defining dimensions (applied, behavioral, analytic, technological, conceptually systematic, effective, generality)
Worked for at least two years in the public school system as a practitioner
Must have public school-based email or other verification of working with students directly in a public school.
Exhibited exceptional service in the past year as defined by two or more of the following :
Used innovative, evidence-based practices and technologies
Prevented placement in more restrictive settings through implementation of evidence-based practices
Provided guidance and technical assistance to school team(s) to increase their capacity to support students with interfering behaviors
Collaborated with a variety of school staff at various levels to ensure positive outcomes and behavior plan implementation
Consistently engaged families and students (when appropriate) in the assessment of behaviors and implementation of behavior supports.
Worked with families to increase their capacity to support their children in the home and community settings.
For the Humanitarian Award:
Must be a BCBA, BCaBA, RBT, BCBA-D in good standing with the BACB.
Practice in the field of ABA according to its defining dimensions (applied, behavioral, analytic, technological, conceptually systematic, effective, generality)
Must have public school-based email or other verification of working with students directly in a public school.
Exhibited at least two or more of the following accomplishments:
Created initiatives that fostered equity, diversity, and inclusion.
Helped to create a more diverse and inclusive classroom, school, or division-wide environment
Recognized and supported underrepresented and underserved student populations through the development and implementation of inclusive behavioral analytic practices
Other (please describe)
For the Friends of VAPSBAN Award:
Demonstrate two or more of the following criteria:
Exemplified collaboration and support with school behavior staff to advance behavior analysis to support student success.
Demonstrated dedication and consistency with ongoing supports and advocacy for the students with whom they work.
Communicated openly and effectively with the classroom teacher, related services personnel, and other relevant staff about student progress and concerns.
Advocated for additional behavior analysts and/or promoted fair pay for them based on their education and skills.
Aspired to continue their own professional growth and development through advanced training and/or pursuit of an additional degree(s).
How to Nominate
One nomination letter - Provide a brief narrative (maximum 500 words, double spaced, 12 pt. font) detailing why the individual should receive this award.
One updated CV/Resume may be requested for consideration of the nomination.
